Rare autoimmune diseases comprise a heterogeneous group of disorders where the immune system mistakenly targets and attacks the body’s own tissues.
These diseases can affect various organs and systems, leading to diverse clinical manifestations. Examples include systemic lupus erythematodes, systemic diseases with autoimmune uveitis, and autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome. Due to their rarity, diagnosis is often challenging and involves a combination of clinical evaluation, serological tests for specific autoantibodies, advanced imaging techniques, and genetic testing. Management typically involves immunosuppressive therapies, such as corticosteroids, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, and biologics, tailored to the specific disease and patient needs. In rare cases, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation may be necessary to cure the disease. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential to prevent irreversible tissue damage and improve patient outcomes. Given their complexity and rarity, these diseases often require specialized care and ongoing monitoring.
